Suicide and beyond

This past week our attention has been focused on the sad subject of suicide.

Crisis Text Line: Text TALK to 741741

With the tragic passing of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain, the topic of suicide has once again been raised in the national discussion.  In the past, mental health issues have often been stigmatized and marginalized in the public eye.  Often it takes the death of well-known celebrity to move us to action.

As a victim of domestic abuse I understand the complexity of mental health issues.  It is so easy to stand from the outside looking in and wonder, Why does she stay?  Where does one have to be internally where ending ones own life makes sense?  It’s natural and human for us to ask those questions.

I understand first hand the terrible feeling of complete loss.  I understand the feeling of complete inadequacy when I had not the first clue how to help someone reaching out to me for help.  Fortunately there are many professionals who do.  And it would behoove us to use this opportunity to educate ourselves so we can be in a stronger position to help someone should they see us as the one friend they need in that pivotal moment.

I think doing that would be an adequate memorial to those we have lost this week.
