My favorite season is the autumn.  It has always been so.  I love the cooler, crisp weather.  The brilliance of the leaves as they shed the verdant green of the summer months.  I love apple pie, thick cozy wool sweaters, and sturdy warm leather boots.  I love fires and that smoke smell that permeates your clothes and hair when you sit too close.

However, lately, summer has been getting a second look.  Maybe because I am fully enjoying some outdoor pursuits, hiking, archery and cloud watching.  There’s something to be said, on a hot summer evening, about sharing an ice cream sundae resplendent with peanut butter and hot fudge.  Summer is definitely growing on me.

A few weeks ago my boyfriend and I hiked the Devil’s Hole Trail.  Other than the scary amount of hikers who brought neither water nor proper footwear, the hike was exhilarating and beautiful.  It’s a hike that has everything, rushing white water, sun-dappled hiking paths, deep cool caverns, and a rocky plateau that’s just perfect for sharing lunch.  We hiked in, laid on the warm, sunny rocks, ate and read and enjoyed both the outdoors and each other.

Sharing the long, warm, summer days with someone you love is what makes it such a special season.  Sure, there’s frigid winter nights, curled up by the fire (if you’re lucky enough to have one, indoors) but for me, it’s feeling the heat and softness of another’s sun-warmed skin that appeals to me.  It’s the shock of the cold water in the swimming pool and the sound of the neighbors out cutting their lawn at dusk.  Summer is making a strong appeal to become my new favorite season.

So, the jury is still out.  I’ll let you know once I luxuriate in the upcoming fall, a steaming mug of hot chocolate in my hands, curled up in a cozy throw, reading and dreaming up new plans and adventures to share.
